Ponte Emilio o Ponte Rotto: what do users think?

Travler: Impressive ancient bridge.Photo spots: Ponte Palatino, Lungotevere dei Pierleoni 19

Sylvain Desmille: According to the latest discoveries, it seems that the Aemilius bridge was not built in 179 BC but in 214 BC, at the time of the construction of the Aurélia way. It is the second bridge in Rome and the oldest of which there are vestiges. It was restored or even rebuilt by Emperor Augustus. It was from this bridge that the corpse of Emperor Heliogabalus was thrown in 222 AD. The very violent floods of the Tiber forced it to be partially reconstructed. But the flood of 1598 which carried away three of the six arches got the better of the Aemilius bridge, then nicknamed "the broken bridge". Nature has invaded it, giving it the appearance of romantic ruins. You can see it from the footbridge built next door in the 19th century or even better from below, at the detour of the promenade that surrounds the Tiber Island. Good visit.

Stefano Manzo: è presente nel Museo di Roma in Trastevere.

f Crouzier: Historic, timeless... This bridge in ruins, impassable today at more than 2000 years old. The Roman legions used it more than once.

Mariusz Gierba: Ponte Rotto is the name of the section of the ancient "pons Aemilius", located in front of the modern Palatine Bridge. The first construction of the bridge is recorded around 241 BC, in connection with the opening of the great consular road "via Aurelia". At first, it consisted of pylons and a wooden walkway. Only in 142 B.C.E. the bridge was completed with the construction of stone arches thanks to the consuls Publius Cornelius Emilianus and Lucius Mummius. In 12 B.C.E. August made the first complete reconstruction and the bridge was named "Ponte Massimo". In 1144, the bridge was named "Ponte Senatorium", after renovation carried out on the initiative of Roman senators. In the following centuries, there were numerous collapses caused by its diagonal position in relation to the river current, which required various interventions and reconstructions, always unsuccessful, until its complete renovation according to the design of Michelangelo and implementation by Nanni di Baccio Bigio in 1552. But already 14 In September 1557, a great flood destroyed the bridge again and Gregory XIII Boncompagni ordered another reconstruction in the jubilee year of 1575. The new Acqua Felice pipeline in Trastevere was routed over the bridge to feed the fountain in Piazza di S. Maria in Trastevere. On December 24, 1598, as a result of another gigantic flood, the river took three of the six arches of the bridge, which were never rebuilt. The standing half of the bridge, anchored on the right bank, was transformed into a hanging garden, a sort of flowery balcony over the river, until the late eighteenth century, when the precarious stability of the bridge became very apparent. In 1853, Pietro Lanciani brought the bridge back to life by building a metal footbridge supported by ropes that connected it to the left bank. This solution survived until 1887, when the demolition of the pavement and the creation of a new adjacent Palatine Bridge were decreed. Due to technical reasons related to this new construction, the ancient bridge was stripped of two of its three arches, leaving only one arch to be seen.

Sigitas Brazinskas: In every step - another landmark. First time in Rome, excited about the city. The bridge is like from nowhere to nowhere, but containing important history.

daniele pedroni: I WILL START IMMEDIATELY TO SAY THAT I WAS VERY EXCITED TO SEE IT UP CLOSE, FROM THE ISLAND OF TIBERINA! IF THIS BRIDGE CAN BE CALLED SO SINCE THAT IT HAS REMAINED A RUIN IN FACT CALLED A BROKEN BRIDGE BY US ROMANS EVEN IF HIS NAME IS EMILIO, BUT BEAUTIFUL ESPECIALLY AFTER KNOWING ABOUT ITS HISTORY AND HOW MANY IT HAS SEEN AND PAST HAS LIKE ME ALREADY SAID EXCITED TO GO TO VISIT IMMEDIATELY! POSITIONED IN THE MIDDLE OF THE RIVER UNFORTUNATELY BETWEEN A LOT OF DIRTY WHICH THE TIBER CARRIES GIVES STRANGE SENSATIONS, OF FAR THOUGHTS! I CAN ONLY SAY THAT I VERY LIKED SITTING IN FRONT OF WATCHING IT THEN RETURNING HOME WITH GOOD FEELINGS OF HAVING SEEN A MONUMENT THAT NOT EVERYONE KNOWS ITS DETAILS WELL

Maciej Maciejewski: on the Tiber is an attraction that may escape our attention during a visit to Rome. The construction of this facility began in 179 BCE during the time of Marcus Aemilius Lepidus. The rest of the pillars erected at that time were added only after thirty years, in 142 BC. Currently, we can see one bay of this magnificent building. I recommend

Dariusz Stryjewski: View of the Tiber Island

Cristian Mitroi: Oldest bridge in Rome

Michele Soldovieri: Only one arch remains of this bridge which once boasted of being the longest in Rome. Now it stands there, in the middle of the river, close to the bridge de fero, to suffer the blows of the waters of the Tiber, without reacting, after its other arches have definitively abandoned it to itself.Once the broken bridge had elegant names with it, it was called Ponte Emilio, then, with a touch of coquetry, Ponte Massimo and finally Ponte di Santa Maria. Now, whoever passes along the Lungotevere or crosses the bridge de fero or descends on the quay of the Tiber, feels infinite tenderness towards this isolated section and tries to console him by whispering these words to him, broken bridge, don't be angry if the other Roman bridges have held up to wrath of the Tiber and you don't, your place is still here and we Romans love you just the same.

Grzegorz Grzegorz: Beautiful

Luke Hughes: Amazing to see a section of a bridge a couple of thousand years old and in fairly good condition. Worth pausing as you pass to admire it. A temple to Hercules just across the road.

Fahad Aqeel: I sat on the island across it and just marveled at the history that may have taken on and around that bridge. Maybe hundreds or thousands years ago someone else sat where I sat and marveled at it.

Paweł Pietras: A beautiful piece of an old Roman bridge.

Malena Skaale: , after whom it is named, from the architect Baccio Pontelli, who reused the foundations of a prior Roman bridge, the Pons Aurelius, which is also known as Pons Antoninus and had been destroyed during the early Middle Ages. Currently traffic on the bridge is restricted to pedestrians

Domenico Mancuso (Dominik): Beautiful, place where you can find peace and tranquility and not need anything.

rizio75 Aaaa: Okkkk

Walter Silvi (Walpy): Rome has always been beautiful and magnificent

Sylvain Desmille: Located a little out of the way, the Milvian Bridge played an important role in the history of Rome because it controlled the north of the City. It was here that Constantine defeated his rival Maxentius in 312 AD. Following this victory, he authorized Christianity. It is also here that Garibaldi countered the French troops. On the other hand, if the Milvian bridge was indeed one of the oldest in Rome, the one that today crosses the Tiber has been restored many times, and there is not much left of the ancient bridge except its location. It is now a pedestrian-only bridge. Nice view more unknown.

marco campanelli: It doesn't need comments

Orietta Lilli: il cuore pulsante di Roma

Mauro “Swing Maniacs Lindy Hop” Pantanella: Piccolo bar ben fornito. Ma non fa caffè

pietro ciccolini: Good

Jan Pieter: Super nice view and markets right along the river

I Plascencia: Very beautiful place

Clement Per: The bridge is pretty. It is passable by car, bicycle and pedestrian.
